Paranormal State Illustrated

Taking a close look at what you see and hear on a “Real Life. Drama.” TV series.

Shelley Seighman’s first name is spelled two ways appearing in screen captions about 17 seconds apart. One way is incorrect.

SIXTH SENSE: SHELLEY SPELLED TWO WAYS

Screenshot from Paranormal State “Sixth Sense” Shelley’s name spelled incorrectly as “S-H-E-L-L-Y”

Why didn’t someone notice the misspelling of Shelley Seighman’s name before this episode was aired? She is a PRS client. So, here is a nationally aired TV series that displays screen captions of client names, and didn’t notice that her name was spelled two different ways within 17 seconds- one of which was spelled incorrectly.

Screenshot from Paranormal State “Sixth Sense” Caption approximately 17 seconds later with her name spelled correctly as “S-H-E-L-L-E-Y”.

INCORRECT SPELLING

CORRECT SPELLING

Here is how Shelley’s name is spelled at about 3 minutes and 26 seconds into the episode.

And here is how Shelley’s name is spelled at about 17 seconds later.

Shelley was a Paranormal Research Society (PRS) client and figured prominently into the “Sixth Sense” episode. Personally, I don’t think Shelley’s name should have been misspelled on a nationally aired TV series. Ryan should have noticed the error because he is credited as a Consulting Producer, and even if the misspelling slipped by Ryan, someone else should have noticed the error. In my opinion, this is an example of poor quality control and fact checking.

Also, Shelley was married at the time, and her husband’s name was Bryan. B-r-y-a-n. This is a less-common version of spelling Brian. Anyway, Ryan spelled Bryan’s name as “Brian” in the Paranormal Insider, Episode Post-Mortem: “Sixth Sense” which was posted presumably by Ryan, on Tuesday December 11, 2007 8:32 AM. But you might not get to see the Episode Post-Mortem for the “Sixth Sense,” or any other Post-Mortem for that matter. If I didn’t know any better, it appears an attempt has been made to systematically delete and remove the articles from the Internet. I sent e-mail requests to Ryan Buell, Sergey Poberezhny, Eilfie Music, media@paranormalresearchsociety.org, and MEDIA Director: Alan Urtz, asking if the Episode Post-Mortems and other articles posted on the “older” version of the Paranormal Insider were available on-line. All the e-mail requests I sent to them were returned to me stating “mail to that recipient is not accepted.” I would figure Ryan might have used a simple strategy to remember and accurately spell Bryan’s name. Ryan could have thought to himself “Bryan, his name includes my complete name, Ryan, but with a B added in front. B-r-y-a-n”
